Vision · Open Invitational

The national platform
the field never had.

Open Invitational is building the first international art fair dedicated exclusively to contemporary artists working within progressive studios.

Across the United States, thousands of artists work within professional studio environments connected to a growing network of progressive studios. Major museums have increasingly recognized the significance of this field through exhibitions, acquisitions, and scholarship.

Yet until Open Invitational, no national platform existed to present these artists together at scale.

Open Invitational exists to change that.

The Opportunity

Institutional recognition arrived
before market visibility.

Artists working within progressive studios often build decades-long practices within rigorous studio environments — producing deeply original bodies of work outside traditional academic and commercial systems.

Institutions recognized the significance of this field before the broader market did.

Museums including Museum of Modern Art, American Folk Art Museum, and Collection de l'Art Brut have increasingly collected and exhibited artists emerging from progressive studios.

Open Invitational creates the platform that connects this work to collectors, curators, institutions, and the broader contemporary art world at national and international scale.

What Makes It Different

Free for Studios

Participating studios pay no booth fees, removing financial barriers for nonprofit organizations that could not otherwise participate in a national art fair environment.

Free for the Public

Open access ensures the work reaches audiences beyond existing collector and institutional circles. The fair operates as a genuine public cultural event rather than a closed market environment.

National Participation

Studios from across the United States present their strongest artists within a single platform — creating one place where collectors, curators, and institutions can encounter the breadth of the field together.

Collector Engagement

Collectors gain direct access to extraordinary work that remains largely underrepresented within the mainstream contemporary art market. Institutional discovery and collector discovery happen simultaneously.

Why Philanthropic Support Matters

Philanthropic support allows Open Invitational to operate independently of the financial structures that typically exclude nonprofit studios and emerging artists from large-scale art fairs.

Participation remains free for studios
Studios are able to participate regardless of organizational size or financial resources.
Artist travel and logistics are supported
Artists and studios that would otherwise be unable to attend can fully participate in the fair.
Public access remains free
New audiences encounter the work every year without financial barriers to entry.
Long-term sustainability is prioritized
The platform grows through institutional and philanthropic support rather than dependence on commercial booth fees.
Founding support builds permanent infrastructure
Lead gifts establish the long-term national platform the field has historically lacked.
