Where the museum
comes alive.

Open Universe is not just a collection — it is a gathering. Every node location is a site for openings, artist talks, and public programming that brings people face to face with the work and the artists who made it. The museum lives in these moments as much as it lives on the walls.

What this means

Art that exists in the world invites the world in.

When Open Universe places work in a hospital, an office, or a civic building, that space becomes more than a node — it becomes a site of genuine cultural life. Openings bring the surrounding community into spaces they already occupy. Programming connects people to artists they would never encounter through a traditional gallery visit.

This is what makes the distributed model more than a logistical idea. The collection moves. The community follows. The museum grows every time a door opens.

Public programming

01
Artist talks
Artists from the collection speak at museum partner locations — in person or virtually — connecting directly with the communities their work now inhabits. Talks are free and open to the public.
02
Community openings
Every new rotation is a new opening. Node hosts invite their staff, clients, patients, and neighbors — creating a recurring moment of cultural life in spaces that wouldn't otherwise have one.
03
Collector events
Private events for collectors, donors, and institutional partners — deeper access to the collection, the artists, and the museum's development. Invitation only.

The works — in the world

What it means to encounter the work

The Open Universe collection does not wait to be found. It is placed where people already are — in the waiting room, the lobby, the corridor. The encounter is unplanned. That is the point. Art that meets people in their daily lives creates a different kind of connection than art that requires a special trip.

As the collection grows, this page will document specific works in rotation — where they are, what they mean, and the conversations they are generating in the communities that host them.

From the collection
"These are not objects on loan. They are works that belong to the places they occupy — for the time they are there."

The node community

Institutions that host the collection become part of it.

Museum partners are not venues — they are members of a growing national community of institutions that have chosen to bring museum-quality work into their spaces and their communities. Each node is connected to every other node through the collection they share.

As the network grows, museum partners will gather — virtually and in person — for programming, shared events, and a deepening relationship with the artists and the museum.
