The thinking
behind the institution.

Open Universe is not just building a museum — it is building a body of thought about what this field is, why it matters, and where it is going. Essays, research, and institutional writing from the team and invited voices. Building now. Publishing as it's ready.

Why this matters

The field needs an intellectual home
as much as a physical one.

Progressive studio art has been written about in isolation — individual artists, individual studios, individual exhibitions. What doesn't yet exist is a sustained body of writing that treats the field as a whole: its history, its economics, its relationship to contemporary art, its institutional future.

Open Universe intends to build that. Not an academic journal. Not a press release. Writing that is serious, honest, and useful — for the artists, the studios, the collectors, and the institutions that are beginning to take this field seriously.

Topics we're writing about

The progressive studio field
Its history from Creative Growth in 1974 to today. The studios, the artists, the economics. Why it has remained outside the mainstream and why that is changing.

The archive problem
Artists in this field have created thousands of works over decades. Most are undocumented. What happens to a body of work — and a life's practice — when no institution records it?

Disability and contemporary art
The institutions are ahead of the market. MoMA, the American Folk Art Museum, the Oakland Museum. Why are major museums collecting this work before the collector base has formed?

04
The distributed museum model
What Open Universe is building is not a conventional museum. Why the distributed model — hub plus nodes — is the right institutional form for this moment, and what it could become.

05
Authenticity and the art market
The art world is on a constant hunt for work that is not made self-consciously for the market. This field has it in abundance. What does that mean for value, for collecting, and for institutions?

Patronage as discovery
Living with art changes how you see it. The Living Collection model is not just a funding mechanism — it is a discovery pipeline. What does it mean to live with work before you collect it?
