Community loan program

Art where
people need it most.

The Community Loan Program brings original works by artists with disabilities into senior centers, hospitals, libraries, and community organizations — the spaces where art has the most human impact but the least institutional support.

Open Universe manages every placement as a formal exhibition loan. The work always remains part of the collection — and the artist is always protected.

Where we place work
Senior centers

Senior & elder care

Original works placed in common areas, dining rooms, and therapeutic spaces — bringing color, story, and human connection to residents and staff alike.

Hospitals & clinics

Healthcare environments

Art in waiting rooms, corridors, and patient areas that offers comfort, distraction, and beauty during difficult moments — for patients, families, and care teams.

Libraries

Public libraries

Works that bring the museum into community spaces — sparking curiosity, conversation, and connection in one of the last truly public institutions.

How it works
01

Apply for a placement

Tell us about your organization, your space, and the community you serve. We'll review your application and get back to you within two weeks.

02

We curate the works

Our team selects works from the Living Collection suited to your space and community. Every work comes with the artist's full story.

03

The loan begins

Works are placed under a formal loan agreement. Open Universe manages the relationship, handles logistics, and checks in regularly throughout the placement.

How we protect the work

Community placements are structured as exhibition loans — not donations.

Open Universe retains ownership of every work placed through the Community Loan Program. This means the artist's work is always protected, the collection remains intact, and we can manage relationships with care — regardless of changes in an organization's budget or leadership.

If a placement ends, the work returns to the collection and finds a new home. Nothing is ever lost.
